Thank you to everyone who joined us for a wonderful Falling Leaves Autumn Open Day on Saturday 2nd November. As usual, visitors enjoyed a selection of generously donated delicious cakes and refreshments, plus wood fired pizzas and a hearty pumpkin soup.

A selection of apples picked at Brogdale, brightly coloured knitted veg, arts and crafts creations and activities and an assortment of plants for sale completed the picture.

Meanwhile, as the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, November marks a pivotal moment in the garden calendar. While the vibrant blooms of summer may have faded, there's still plenty of work to be done to prepare for the winter months.

It's time to dig up the last of the carrots, parsnips, and beets before the ground freezes. We've had a particularly good return on our polytunnel grown sweet potatoes. Late greens, such as any remaining lettuces, kale, and spinach can also be harvested, as can any remaining apples, pears, or other fruits.

It's a busy time for raking up fallen leaves and garden debris which can be added to the compost pile. Any remaining weeds can be removed before they set seed, whilst attractive ornamental seedheads can be left in place to benefit birds and wildlife. Now's the time to apply a thick layer of mulch to garden beds to insulate the soil and prevent erosion. It's also an opportune moment to clean and oil garden tools to ensure they're ready for next season.

We've been busy planting wallflowers and spring bulbs and there's still time to get yours in if you haven't already. In the run up to Christmas, remember to look out for our ever popular wreath making workshops. Happy gardening!

Sounds like a fantastic autumn gathering! The mix of seasonal treats, fresh produce, and garden prep tips makes for an engaging read. Nothing beats the crisp air and the smell of fallen leaves—unless, of course, you’re kicking back with a swisher leaf in hand, taking it all in. Looking forward to more updates from the Garden Gate Project!
